The internet nearly exploded yesterday afternoon when a woman posted a picture of a dress on Tumblr, and found that her friends couldn’t agree on the color.
We at ZUM also took the challenge. Like everyone else, were at odds on whether the (ugly in my opinion) dress was gold & white or black & blue.
While only ¼ of us thought it was black & blue, the rest of the team was swearing it was gold & white. There were of course varying answers (blue & brown/bronze, bronze & bluish/white), but I just grouped them in the appropriate categories for demonstration purposes.
The easiest explanation I found online for the social media uproar was from Business Insider (cause let’s be honest, ain’t nobody got time to read long science articles on a random dress color phenomenon!)
“In other words, our individual sensitivity to the blue background lighting of the photo is changing how we see the object in the image.”
If you have time and are interested, the rest of the article is here.
After all is said and done, the debate was closed this morning when the company that made the dress “Roman Originals” tweeted the following:
Ang & Mark for the win!
